For companions & caregivers

Your training. Your credential. Yours to keep.

Connecticut has a new law. Starting January 1, 2027, homemaker companions and caregivers need 8 hours of training to work for an agency. Your agency must provide paid training from approved programs. Here's the part that matters either way: once you've done it, the completion form is yours. Keep it, and your training travels with you.

DCP published approved initial and annual course lists and two completion forms on September 30, 2026. Your agency and you sign the form after training; your agency keeps a copy and gives one to you. Read the update.

What the law means for you

  • If you're new to an agency, you'll need 8 hours of training within your first 90 days — and your agency must pay you for those hours.
  • If you're already working, the statute text says your agency must provide not less than 8 paid hours of annual continuing education from the approved list. §1(a)(1)(B)
  • The statute text also says each approved program must be completed at least once every two calendar years. §1(b)
  • DCP's page reads it differently: at least 8 paid hours of annual continuing education, completed at least once every two calendar years. DCP training requirements. We do not say which reading DCP will enforce. Both side by side.
  • The training covers things you already care about: keeping clients safe, spotting and reporting problems, communicating well, and caring for people with memory loss.

The part that's actually great: it travels with you

Under the new law, your initial training counts at your next job too — for three years — as long as you can show your completion form. Companza is designed to make that easy.
  • Companza-issued credentials have a unique ID and can transfer to another agency on Companza.
  • Employers can check a Companza-issued credential at companza.com/verify. Companza does not authenticate uploaded outside certificates.
  • Keep your signed completion form, whichever training source you use. Uploaded outside certificates do not transfer between agencies on Companza. The law allows qualifying initial training from the past three years to count at a new agency when you furnish the required form.

How it works

  1. Take the training wherever your agency sends you - an approved class or online course.
  2. Make sure your completion form gets recorded - it should name you, the programs, the dates, and carry both signatures. That's the form the law counts.
  3. Keep your signed completion form. Save it and show it to your next employer so they can assess whether your prior initial training meets the law.
